Ebikes for Sporting Clays

VerifiedπŸ‘ 32πŸ’¬ 2

Hi all,

I just first want to say what a great site!  I love the charts, graphs, and comparison tool.

Also, I'd like to introduce myself and my product EbikeScabbards.  I have shot registered sporting clays for the last 10yrs or so and a few years ago I realized I needed a better way to get around the sporting clays course.  Something that was inexpensive, easy to transport, and easy to store.  I designed and prototyped, and tested, and the result is EbikeScabbards.com.  If you are starting to see them now at the shoots and are wondering if an ebike is right for you please do not hesitate to reach out.

I would also love to hear any advice or learnings that anyone has regarding using an ebike on the clays courses.  Whether you use my ebikescabbard or another solution I highly ebikes for clays.  They are not for everyone at every event but really work great in a lot of situations.  Any comments would be great!

If you are thinking about getting an e-bike to use for sporting clays, there are a few features that I have found important to look for and I would like to share them with everyone.  I use a RadRunner2 from RadPower but it is certainly not the only choice out there.

Key Features to Look For in a Sporting Clays bike:

  1. Controller: Ensure the controller stays on long enough for you to shoot a station and is easy and quick to turn back on if it does shut off. All controllers time out and shut off.  Some take longer than others to power back up but all are on the order of a couple seconds.  You just don't want to have to wait for the controller to power up when you're ready to move to the next station.
  2. Twist Throttle: Look for a twist throttle that works regardless of the assist level you're on and one that works without needing to pedal. This allows you to just twist the throttle and go, which is important for easy movement on the course.
  3. Wide Step-Through: A nice wide step-through frame is essential for easy mounting and dismounting. The Radrunner2 excels in this area, making it convenient during frequent stops.
  4. Compact Frame: A reasonably compact frame is important for maneuverability and transportability. It’s helpful to keep the seat low so your feet can easily touch the ground when stopping and starting.
  5. Fat Tires: The 3.3" tires of the Radrunner2 strike a good balance between low rolling resistance and off-road performance, making them ideal for sporting clays courses.
  6. Battery life:  Don't worry about battery life.  Everyone who has never ridden an ebike thinks the battery will run out.  And I did too at first.  In reality I can shoot a 4 day tournament without charging the battery and still have enough charge left for a 10 mile trail ride.

I hope that helps guide you towards a new clays bike. There are certainly a lot of good bikes on the market today but the RadRunner2 is the one that I have found to be the best value while possessing all of the key features.  It is a bit of a mental hurdle to think about riding a bike around the course instead of a cart but once you try it you will be surprised by the freedom of motion and overall control that it gives you.
